Draft Northern Area Plan
The Department have requested that the Commission hold a Public Examination into the draft Northern Area Plan 2016.

Magherafelt Area Plan 2015
The Department adopted the Magherafelt Area Plan on 14th December 2011.

Major Planning Applications
The Commission has arranged a public inquiry to consider a major proposal by Northern Ireland Electricity for a substation at Turleenan, Moy, County Tyrone and a 400-kilovolt overhead line from there to Crossreagh and Crossbane in County Armagh. This is part of a cross-border scheme known as the North/South Interconnector. The inquiry will open at 10.00am on Tuesday 6th March 2012 in Armagh City Hotel.
The Commission has also arranged a hearing to consider a major proposal by Tesco Stores Limited for a food store at Buncrana Road / Templemore Road, Londonderry. This hearing will be conjoined with a public inquiry under Article 123 of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 to consider a later proposal, also by Tesco Stores Limited, for retail development on the same site. The proceedings will open at 10.00am on Tuesday, 17th April 2012 in the Waterfoot Hotel, Londonderry.
Because of issues relating to environmental impact assessment, the Commission is at present unable to proceed with public inquiries in respect of the following major proposals:-
- a proposal for retail development to the south-western side of Lisburn by Sprucefield Centre Limited;
- two proposals for retail development in Newtownards, by Belfast Office Properties Limited and Castle Bawn Limited respectively; and
- a proposal for a runway extension by George Best Belfast City Airport.

New Procedures for Hearings under the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations
The Commission has recently published new procedures for Hearings under the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, which are now available on the Publications page.
Planning Appeals - Intake and Output of Decisions
The Commission processes most appeals in the chronological order in which they were submitted and aims to deal with appeals as efficiently as possible.
The Commission is currently considering cases which were received during the following periods:
- Written Representations received up to and including May 2011
- Written Representations with Site Visits received up to and including July 2011
- Informal Hearings received up to and including July 2011
- Formal Hearings received up to and including July 2011
